Winterreise

Inspired by the song cycle composed in 1827 by Franz Schubert and set to the poems by Wilhelm Müller, Winterreise is a series of 24 drawings completed in early 2025 during a three-month journey to Noyers-sur-Serein, France, where I have kept a home since 2003.

I mapped the melancholic character of the songs onto the landscapes of my solitary walks. In communion with the German Romantics, I project human emotion into the natural world; I reflect upon its fragility and our own.

The small elongated format in pairs evoke the rhythm of footsteps in snow. Their size and darkness invite intimacy; they whisper the silence, the sadness, and the beauty in the songs, and of Winter.
